Steam, sulfur, and shifting earth meet bold linework in this one-of-a-kind mixed media piece created from an original photograph of Bumpass Hell, the largest hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park. It began as an original photograph I took on location in 2023. Through a geometric design and layering process in Photoshop, I transformed the image into an illustration, breaking the landscape into fractured, angular shapes that echo the bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and turquoise pools of this otherworldly place. This piece was completed in 2026.
The illustration is printed on high quality archival watercolor paper, then layered by hand with Copic Sketch markers in an energetic scribble pattern. The palette is dominated by blues, black, and gray, with unexpected pops of yellow and pink that flicker through the composition like mineral deposits and sulfur stains. I deliberately color outside the lines to capture the restless energy of the landscape rather than a literal view of it. This is a one-of-one original custom art piece.
The piece is shipped unmatted and un-framed. Mock-ups are strictly for visualization purposes.
